Cumberland Defeats Trevecca, Sweeps Season Series

Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. - The Trevecca men's basketball team (16-9, 8-4 TranSouth) saw its four-game winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon with a 74-64 loss to #RV Cumberland University (17-7, 7-4 TranSouth) at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center. The Bulldogs sweep the season series from the Trojans, but Trevecca still leads the all-time series 36-27.

"I was really proud of the way the guys battled today," said Head Coach Sam Harris. "We fought back to tie it there late in the game, but just couldn't make enough plays down the stretch to get the win."

The Bulldogs took the lead early and, with the exception of a 9-9 tie with 14:42 remaining, maintained control throughout the first half. Cumberland led by as 12 points (25-13) with 6:52 left, but the Trojans went on a 9-3 run to cut the lead in half, before heading to the locker room down 32-24.

Cumberland pushed the lead back into double digits shortly after halftime, and the Bulldogs maintained an advantage of 8-12 points throughout much of the second half, before the Trojans rallied to tie the game at 53 with 8:11 remaining in the game. But Michael Sweat, who scored a game-high 26 points, drained a three-pointer to put Cumberland back on top for good. Trevecca would get pull within 61-59 on a pair of free throws by JP Nyadaro with 4:54 left, but Johnny Williams answered with a layup at the other end, and the Bulldogs put the game away at the line, scoring their final 11 points from the charity stripe.

"We worked so hard to get back in the game and then Sweat knocked down that three," said Coach Harris. "We just didn't have an answer after that, and they did a good job of hitting their free throws down the stretch. Free throw shooting really hurt us tonight. When you miss 12 free throws and lose by 10, there's the difference in the game right there."

Trevecca had four players in double figures, led by Eric Orr with 15 points. Michael France added 14, Marquise Rudolph 12, and Maliek Daniels 10.

The Trojans shot 59% (23-39) from the floor, 27% (3-11) from three-point range, and 56% (15-27) from the line. Cumberland shot 52% (25-48) from the field, 53% (9-17) from beyond the arc, and 63% (15-24) from the charity stripe.

"We've got a quick turnaround to get ready for Lyon on Monday," added Coach Harris. "We've been playing well lately, and I thought we were pretty good today, we just didn't make enough plays there at the end. But we'll be ready to go for Monday night, and we want to see a good crowd come out to support both teams at home."

The Trojans return home Monday night for a matchup with the Lyon Scots (7-17, 1-11 TranSouth). Trevecca defeated Lyon 70-68 January 19th in Batesville, Ark.
