Box Score CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Trevecca women's basketball team (4-8) wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a 67-37 loss at NAIA No. 9 Lee University (12-1, 4-0 Southern States) Tuesday night. Anna Mitchell, who played at Christ Presbyterian Academy, led Trevecca with 19 points, scoring Trevecca's first 16 points of the game.

Coach Van Atta liked his team's effort, especially in the first half. Van Atta said, "Defensively, our effort was good as we held them to 27 points in the first half, we just ran out of gas there in the second half."

"I can't fault the girls for their effort, they're giving everything we ask of them. Obviously, we have a short bench that got shorter tonight with Chelsey's injury, but we've just got to continue to play through the adversity."

Van Atta is looking forward to returning home for Thursday's conference home opener. "We're doing everything we can to keep their spirits up despite the struggles, and we really need a good crowd for the conference opener Thursday night. Don't look at the record, just look at the effort these girls are giving every day for Trevecca Nazarene University."

Mitchell quickly warmed to the rims at Paul Dana Walker Arena, scoring all 12 of Trevecca's points in the first half. After Lee outscored Trevecca 17-2 to start the game, Mitchell started a 5-0 Trojan run by hitting 1-of-2 from the foul line at the 8:50 mark of the first half. Lee led 17-7 at the 5:48 mark of the half when the Flames outscored the Trojans 10-5 to the break, re-establishing their 15-point (27-12) lead at the half.

Mitchell was 5-8 from the field in the first half and grabbed three rebounds. Both teams had 12 first-half turnovers and the Flames had a 23-18 advantage in rebounding.

Lee opened the second half on a 7-0 run to push their lead to 34-12. Mitchell scored the first four points of the second half for Trevecca, and it wasn't until a pair of Lauren Wasson free throws with 15:22 remaining that a player other than Mitchell scored for Trevecca. Wasson's free throws cut the Lee lead to 17 (35-18), but the Flames pushed back and led 46-22 (24 points) with 10:53 to go. Trevecca outscored Lee 7-2 and cut the lead to 19 (48-29) with 7:21 to go, but Lee stymied the run and pulled away for the victory.

Trevecca's roster was shortened to just seven players when Chelsey Taylor, playing in just her third game of the season due to a preseason injury, went down early in the second half. Taylor had three rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Mitchell led Trevecca with 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field and added eight rebounds and a block. Rachel Raby also had eight rebounds and added a team-high three assists with two blocks and a steal.

As a team Trevecca shot 23% (12-52) from the field and 54% (12-22) from the foul line. TNU hit just 1-of-12 from three-point range. Lee outrebounded Trevecca 46-40.

This was the 22nd meeting in the series, which is now tied 11-11.

The last meeting was in December of 2006, a 67-66 Lee win at the Disney Classic (Orlando, Fla.). Prior to tonight's game, Trevecca had won seven of the last 10 meetings in the series.

Angela Spann scored 13 points to lead the Flames, who shot 35% (21-60) from the field and 31% (9-29) from three-point range. Lee hit 76% (16-21) from the foul line and turned Trevecca's 32 turnovers into 22 points.

The Trojans open TranSouth play Thursday night, when they host the Mid-Continent Cougars (5-8). It's a 6 p.m. tipoff at the Trojan Fieldhouse. MCU has a new Trevecca connection in first-year assistant coach K.C. Casebier. K.C. is the former K.C. Van Atta, daughter of Trevecca coach Gary Van Atta. MCU first-year Sports Information Director Tim Shay is a Trevecca graduate and a former sports information graduate assistant at TNU.
