NASHVILLE, Tenn. - NAIA No. 3 Trevecca (18-3, 7-2 TranSouth)
returned to action for a home tilt against No. 1 Union University (22-1,
10-0) on Thursday, falling 80-69 for their second consecutive loss. Trevecca
lost at No. 6 Freed-Hardeman a week ago.
Union jumped out early thanks to a big
effort on the offensive glass from Josephine Owino. Owino had nine rebounds and
12 points in the first half, but the Trojans hung around. Christian Gibson
started strong for the Trojans, netting eight points of her own in the first
period, and at the break, Union led by four
38-34. Coming out of the break, Union seized
the momentum, scoring the first five points of the half, and the Trojans
suddenly found themselves down by nine 43-34. Trevecca battled back, tying the
game at 49-49 and 51-51 before Union reclaimed
the lead for good. Down the stretch, Union hit
their shots - in the second half, the Bulldogs shot 60% - and the Trojans would
get no closer than four in the final five minutes. Union
sealed the game at the foul line, winning 80-69.
Jennifer Bognar was one of four Trojans in double figures,
netting 16 points. Abby Lawson scored 14 in the game, Gibson had 13, and
Angelica Sails added 12 in the loss. Bognar and Gibson each had five rebounds
to lead the Trojans, and Gibson dished out five assists as well. As a team, Trevecca
shot 24-of-63 (38.1%) from the floor, 9-of-23 (39.1%) from behind the arc, and
12-of-20 (60%) from the charity stripe. Union
outrebounded the Trojans 44-28.
Josephine Owino scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for
the Bulldogs. Kaitlin Dudley (17), Kayla Hudson (14) and Merdeth Jacobs (14)
also scored in double figures. Union dominated
scoring in the paint 36-28. Trevecca held the advantage in points off of
turnovers 21-7.
The Trojans will return to action on Saturday when they hit
the road for Batesville, Ark. to take on the Lyon College Pipers
(8-15, 4-7 TranSouth) for a 2:00 tip.
