NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The NFCA No. 21 Trevecca Nazarene University softball team (18-8, 7-8 GSC) hosted former Great MidwestAthletic Conference rival Kentucky Wesleyan College (4-17, 0-2 G-MAC) for a pair of non-conference games at the Trevecca Softball Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
The Trojans rolled in a pair of shutouts, winning the first game 7-0 and the second 11-0.
SERIES HISTORY/NOTES
The Trojans and Panthers founding members of the G-MAC and a strong rivalry ensued from the beginning. Now with the Trojans in the Gulf South Conference, their proximity will likely see the two programs continue their rivalry, but in non-conference battles. The Trojans hold a 29-13 advantage over the Panthers in the NCAA Division II era.
This is the third meeting of the year, Trevecca beat the Panthers 14-7 at the Chillout in Albertville, Alabama. Trevecca went 5-0 at the Chillout.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
The Trojans struck early, plating three runs in the second inning.
Sarah Nicholson opened the scoring with a two-run home run, driving in
Zoe Lawrence. One batter later,
Annabelle Ellis followed with a home run herself, pushing Trevecca's lead to 3-0.
In the third inning,
Brianna Asmondy extended the lead with a solo home run of her own, making it 4-0. The Trojans tacked on another run in the fourth when
Parker Herrin singled to right, bringing in
Brookelyn Miles.
Trevecca capped the scoring in the fifth, as Nicholson crushed her second homer of the game, giving the Trojans a comfortable 7-0 advantage.
CIRCLE AND BOX NOTES
- Ashlan Sensing (W, 13-4) tossed four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out three.
- Rylee Veron closed the game with a scoreless fifth inning, allowing no hits and striking out one.
- Sarah Nicholson went 2-for-2 with two home runs and three RBIs.
- Annabelle Ellis added a solo homer in the third inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
Trevecca wasted no time, exploding for seven runs in the first inning. Sarah Kinderine got things started with an RBI single, followed by Callie Williams' RBI single to left. Kylie Chetakian then ripped a two-run double down the left field line to make it 5-0. Katie Brooks and Annabelle Ellis each added RBI singles to cap off the dominant first inning.
In the second, Kyleigh Burgett launched a solo home run to extend the lead to 8-0. Ellis added her second homer of the day in the third inning, a solo shot to left, making it 9-0.
Trevecca sealed the win in the fourth when Madison Pruitt drove in two runs with a single up the middle, scoring Cadence Jarrett and Callie Williams for an 11-0 final.
CIRCLE AND BOX NOTES
- Parker Herrin (W, 2-1) threw five shutout innings, allowing four hits with one strikeout.
- Haylie Brooks pitched two scoreless innings in relief, striking out two.
- Annabelle Ellis had a big day, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.
- Kyleigh Burgett homered in the second inning.
NEXT ON THE DIAMOND
Trevecca hits the road this weekend for a three-game Gulf South Conference series at Mississippi College (21-8, 11-4 GSC), with a doubleheader on Friday and a series finale on Saturday.
