NASHVILLE – The NFCA No. 13 Trevecca Nazarene University softball team (15-8, 6-8 GSC) welcomed Union University (7-19, 5-8 GSC) for a Gulf South Conference doubleheader at the Trevecca Softball Complex on Friday afternoon.
Union swept the day, winning game one 2-0 and taking game two 8-2.
SERIES HISTORY/NOTES
The longtime foes met for the first time as members of the Gulf South Conference, but the Bulldogs are one of the teams the Trojans have faced the most in their history.
Since the 2002 season, Trevecca owns a 41-16 edge in the series.
Since both teams moved to NCAA DII play (in 2013) the Trojans lead the series 10-8.
In the 11 years (2002-2012) before the teams moved to the NCAA, when both were in the NAIA and the TranSouth Conference, the Trojans led the series 31-8.
The Trojans have won seven of the last ten meetings in the series. Prior to today, Union took a 1-0 victory from the Trojans in game one of what was a non-conference doubleheader last year. Trevecca won the second game 9-8.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
TNU 0, UU 2
A sixth-inning rally proved to be the difference in a pitchers' duel, as Union capitalized on a defensive miscue to score two unearned runs and hold off Trevecca for the win.
Union's Shelby Thompson singled to right-center with one out, driving in the first run of the game and advancing to second on an error. Moments later, Macey Jennings crossed home plate on another defensive miscue to extend the Bulldogs' lead.
Trevecca's offense was held in check, recording just three hits while stranding seven runners.
CIRCLE AND BOX NOTES
· Ashlan Sensing (L, 11-4) threw six innings, allowing five hits and two unearned runs while striking out three.
· Brookelyn Miles recorded Trevecca's only stolen base of the game.
· Sarah Kinderdine reached base after being hit by a pitch.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
TNU 2, UU 8
Union's offense broke out in game two, putting up four runs in the third inning and never looking back. The Bulldogs tacked on two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the win.
Trevecca got on the board in the third when Hollingsworth doubled down the left-field line, scoring Zoe Lawrence. The Trojans' only other run came in the fifth on a Union error that allowed Annabelle Ellis to score.
Union capitalized on key hits and defensive lapses, scoring three unearned runs while outhitting Trevecca 13-7.
CIRCLE AND BOX NOTES
· Haylie Brooks (L, 1-3) took the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) in 2.2 innings.
· Shay Hollingsworth led the Trojans, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
· Annabelle Ellis recorded a hit and scored a run.
· Trevecca left six runners on base.
NEXT ON THE DIAMOND
The Trojans and Bulldogs close out the three-game series on Sunday with first pitch set for 2:00 PM
Originally the three-game set was to follow a single game on Friday culminating in a Saturday doubleheader but had to be rearranged due to weather.
Trevecca continues their five-game homestand with a pair of games against former conference rival Kentucky Wesleyan March 19 starting at 2:00 PM.
